More and more cities in India are restricting car washing amidst an extreme heatwave. Temperatures have crossed 50C in parts of northern and central India, the BBC reports.

According to the British news agency, more than 37 cities in India recorded temperatures over 45 C this week.  On Tuesday, temperature in capital Delhi’s Narela and Mungeshpur areas hit a record-breaking 49.9C.

The heatwave is expected to persist in several parts of India for the next few days.

Water distribution has been restricted in many parts of the country and some states have also cut back on car washing. Many cities in Uttarakhand are currently only allowed to dry wash cars.

Rajasthan’s Jaipur city reported three deaths due to heat stroke on Tuesday, the BBC said.

By the end of the month, the monsoon is expected to hit parts of India, which will bring some relief.
